The holy and glorious Virgin-martyr Markella of Chios (also Marcella) lived during the fourteenth century. After her Christian mother died, her pagan father wished Markella to be his wife. After her refusal, he cut her in pieces. The place of her martyrdom is visited by pilgrims. Her feast day is celebrated on July 22.
