The Church emerged from a unification council which was convoked by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople and took place in the St. Sophia's Cathedral on 15 December 2018<ref name="council" />. The council succeeded to unite the [[Ukrainian Orthodox Church – Kyiv Patriarchate]], the [[Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church]] and two bishops of the [[Ukrainian Orthodox Church|Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate)]] that is [[autonomy|autonomous]] under the [[Church of Russia]].<ref name="ocu" /> The rest of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate rejected the unification council. On 6 January 2019, a Tomos of Autocephaly was granted to the new Church by the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople.<ref name="tomos" />.

As of 1 January 2021, there were 6981 parishes, 79 monasteries and 4572 priests associated with the Orthodox Church of Ukraine.<ref>[https://dess.gov.ua/statistics-2020/ State Service of Ukraine for Ethnopolitics and Freedom of Conscience]</ref>.
