Panteleimon (Mpezenitis) of Attica

Panteleimon (Mpezenitis) of Attica was the Metropolitan of the Metropolis of Attica, a metropolis of the Church of Greece, before he was deposed in 2005. He had been metropolitan of Attica since 1994.

Life

Panteleimon (Mpezenitis) was born in the island of Chios, a Greek island in the Aegean Sea. After an education in theology including post-graduate studies in France, he entered the Holy Orders. In 1961, he was ordained a deacon and, in 1963, a priest.

Before his election to the episcopate, Father Panteleimon served as director of Apostoliki Diakonia, the official publishing house and missionary arm of the Church of Greece as well as the warden of its theological hostel. After his election to the episcopate in 1977, he was consecrated the bishop of Zakynthos in the Ionian Islands on September 15, 1977. In 1994, he was transferred to lead the Metropolis of Attica, at the time said to be Greece's richest diocese.

In early 2005, Metr. Panteleimon was deposed by the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece amid charges of financial and sexual scandal.
