Athanasius II of Alexandria
Athanasius II of Alexandria was the Patriarch and Pope of Alexandria of the Church of Alexandria from 490 to 496. A Miaphysite, he is also listed as Pope and Patriarch by the Church of Alexandria (Coptic). Patr. Athanasius was patriarch during the period of the developing schism between the Chalcedonians and non-Chalcedonians following the Fourth Ecumenical Council at Chalcedon.
Life
Little is known of Athanasius' early life. Before his election as patriarch he was a priest in an Alexandrian church. His reign was comparatively uneventful as there were no pronounced problems in the church during his patriarchate, as the conflict about the decisions at the Council at Chalcedon had subsided.
Athanasius reposed on September 29, 496, the day of his commemorated in the Coptic Synaxarion, the 20th of Thout.
