The Right Reverend Athanasy (Martos) was the first bishop of Brisbane within the Diocese of Australia and New Zealand, Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia. He was accepted from the autonomous Byelorussian Orthodox Church into the Russian Orthodox Church Ourside Russia on May 6, 1946, and became a bishop of Brisbane within the diocese.

During a period of time from October 1952 to May 1953 that Archbishop Theodore of Sydney was hospitalised, Bp. Athanasy accepted the administration of the diocese.

Between 1953 and 1955, he was appointed to no less than four sees - Tunisia, Edmondton, Montevideo, and Buenos Aires, the last of which he took up, arriving in 1956.
