The Holy Prophet Zephaniah, or "Sophonias" in Greek, is the ninth of the Twelve Minor Prophets. He was born of the tribe of Levi and was active around 640 B.C.

His name is interpreted in the Greek Synaxarion in various ways, from "watch-tower of the Lord" to other meanings exemplifying the prophet's view in the mysteries of God's will, such as "to hide" or "Yahweh has hidden".
