Eugene (Reshetnikov) of Vereya

Archbishop Eugene (Архиепископ Евгений, secular name Valery Germanovich Reshetnikov, Валерий Германович Решетников) is bishop of the Russian Orthodox Church, archbishop of Vereya, vicar of Moscow eparchy, rector of Moscow Theological Academy and Seminary.

Biography

Born on October 9, 1957 in Kazakhstan. He spent adolescent and adolescent years in Kirov. After completing eight year high school he studied at the Kirov building college. In 1977-1979 he served in the Soviet Army. After demobilization, he worked in Vyatka diocesan administration, while acting as subdeacon of Bishop Chrysanthos (Chepil).

In 1983, he graduated from the Moscow Theological Seminary in 1987, with Candidate of theology degree, after defending his thesis "The Pastorhood in the Russian Church in X-XIII centuries" («Пастырство в Русской Церкви в X-XIII веках»).

July 27, 1986 he was tonsured a monk with the name Eugene. On August 3 he ordained deacon, then on August 28 he ordained priest.

In March 1988, the day of Pascha, was elevated to the rank of hegumen. January 1, 1989 he elevated to the rank of archimandrite and appointed Vice-Chancellor of the Moscow Theological Schools for administrative work. November 16, 1990 was appointed inspector of Moscow Theological Seminary.

August 6, 1991 by decree of His Holiness Patriarch Alexius II he was appointed rector of Stavropol theological seminary.

February 28, 1994 by decree of Patr. Alexius he was appointed acting Chairman of the Education Committee of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church.

April 16, 1994 he was consecrated Bishop of Vereyа, vicar of the Moscow diocese.

July 18, 1995 was appointed rector of the Moscow Theological Schools with preservation of the post of Chairman of the Education Committee.

On July 18, 1998 The Holy Synod appointed him Chairman of the Education Committee.

On July 18, 1999 The Holy Synod appointed him deputy Chairman of the Synodal Theological Commission.

On February 25, 2000 he was elevated to the rank of archbishop.

In 2005-2007 he was member of dialogue commission between Moscow Patriarchate and Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia.

On March 22, 2011 he became member of the Supreme Church Council of the Russian Orthodox Church.
