Chrysanthus of Constantinople

His All Holiness Chrysanthus of Constantinople was the Patriarch of Constantinople of the Church of Constantinople from 1824 to 1826.

Life

Little is known of the life of Patr. Chrysanthus. The dates of his birth and death are not known. His tenure as patriarch in Constantinople was during unsettled times as Greek patriots fought for Greek independence from Ottoman rule.

While patriarch of Constantinople, Chrysanthus was pressured by the Ottoman government to take action against the Patriarch of Alexandria, Theophilus II, for his lengthy absence from Alexandria during the last years of his patriarchate. Theophilus II had become a secret member of the Society of Friends (Filiki Eteria) Greek revolutionary movement and remained on the island of Patmos during the Greek war of independence. On October 14, 1825, Patr. Chrysanthus convened a synod in Constantinople that deposed Theophilus from his duties as patriarch of Alexandria.
