Apollos Ivanovich Naumov was the Ober-Procurator of the Apostolic Governing Synod from 1786 until his retirement in 1791. He served as an intermediator between the Empress Catherine II and the hierarchs of the Synod.
Life
Apollos Ivanovich was born on December 4, 1719. Little is known of his early life. He received an appointment as Secretary of the Moscow office of the Holy Synod in 1764. In 1772, he received the rank of court counselor for this position. In 1774, he became the Chief Secretary. On June 28, 1786, Apollos Ivanovich was appointed Ober-Procurator of the Holy Synod, with the rank of Counselor of State. He held this position until he retired on July 26, 1791, due to old age and failing health.
As ober procurator Apollos Ivanovich was concerned with delivering to the Synod instructions from Empress Catherine relating to improving church administration. The decisions by the Synod generally were made under their own discretion, without regard to Apollos Ivanovich's opinions. Finding that his influence in the Synod was insignificant, and troubled by his advancing age and poor health, Apollos Ivanovich submitted his resignation in 1791. Having received an approval for retirement he departed the position of ober procurator on July 26, 1791.
Apollos Ivanovich died on May 2, 1792 in St. Petersburg and was buried in the Smolensk cemetery.
