Life

Little is known of the life of Patr. Nicanor. His time as patriarch was characterized as a strange situation because of the election concurrent with his term of Archimandrite Evgenios as “his caretaker and successor”. This precipitated serious internal disputes within the Church of Alexandria. Harassment by Evgenios finally resulted in the resignation of Patr. Nicanor on March 19, 1869. He was then succeeded by Patr. Sophronius IV.
