His Eminence Daniel (Nushiro) of Japan, Archbishop of Tokyo, Metropolitan of All Japan, is the current primate of the Church of Japan. Prior to his election as Archbishop of Tokyo, Daniel was Bishop of Kyoto.
His Eminence Daniel was born as Ikuo Nushiro in Toyohashi, Aichi, in mid-Japan on September 5, 1938. He graduated with a degree in French literature from Aichi University in 1962. He studied at Tokyo Orthodox Seminary from 1962 to 1965 and St. Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary from 1965 to 1969.
In November 1969, he was ordained a deacon. From 1970 he served as deacon at Holy Resurrection Cathedral (Tokyo, Japan). In 1972 he was ordained a priest and appointed to the parish of Toyohashi, his birthplace.
He was married but later widowed. As a priest in his widowhood, he became a monk on August 20, 1999, and since then known as Father Daniel. On November 14 of the same year he was consecrated as bishop and appointed to the Diocese of Kyoto and Western Japan.
After the death of Metropolitan Theodosius (Nagashima) in 1999, Bp. Daniel was elected to be his successor and was enthroned in 2000 as Archbishop of Tokyo and Metropolitan of All Japan.
His Eminence is a devout student of Church Fathers, especially Greek and Russian authors. For believers he has written several brochures about their teachings in Japanese.
Metr. Daniel participated in the Local Council of the Russian Orthodox Church that elected Metr. Kyrill of Smolensk and Kaliningrad the successor to the late Patr. Alexei II on January 27, 2009. Metr. Daniel was a member of the Presidium of the Local Council.
