His Grace Bishop Barnabas (Safronov) of Pavlodar and Ust-Kamenogorsk is the ruling bishop of the Eparchy of Pavlodar, which is one of the constituent dioceses of the Russian Orthodox Church's Metropolia of Kazakhstan.
Life
Bishop Barnabas was born Vasiliy Alekseyevich Safronov on February 21, 1957 in Uryupinsk, USSR. In 1975, Vasiliy entered the Armed Forces the USSR for two years, then entered the Moscow Theological Seminary three years later in 1978. During his studies he was tonsured a monk at the Lavra of the Holy Trinity and St. Sergius in Sergiev Posad with the name Barnabas. Immediately after completing his studies at the Seminary in 1981 Vasiliy entered the Moscow Theological Academy, completing his studies there in 1985.
During his studies Fr. Barnabas was ordained first to the deaconate and then to the priesthood. In 1987 he was elevated to the rank of igumen and in 1990 to the rank of archimandrite. On October 6, 2010 the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church elected Fr. Barnabas Bishop of Pavlodar and Ust-Kamenogorsk. His consecration to the episcopacy took place on November 14, 2010 in Moscow's Cathedral of Christ the Savior and was celebrated by Patriarch Cyril of Moscow and All Rus'.
