Savvas (Heimonetos) of Nubia
His Eminence, the Most Reverend Savvas (Heimonettos) of Nubia is Metropolitan of the Archdiocese of Nubia, part of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria and All Africa.
Life
Vasilios Heimonettos was born in 1971 in Rhodes. Vasilios graduated from the Patmios Ecclesiastical Academy and the Theological Faculty of the University of Athens, where he studied in the Department of Social Theology.
In 1990, he was tonsured a monk with the name Savvas at the Monastery of the Archangel Michael in Tharri, Rhodes by Igumen Amphilochios of the monastery. In 1991, he was ordained a deacon and then, in 1993, a priest by Metropolitan Apostolos of Rhodes. At the same time he was elevated to the dignity of archimandrite. During the next eight years Fr. Savvas served in the Metropolis of Rhodes as Hierarchal Vicar of Halki and as a priest in the parishes of the metropolis.
Fr. Savvas joined the Church of Alexandria at the invitation of Patriarch Petros VII, where he was appointed the parish priest of the Patriarchal Church of St. Savvas the Sanctified in Alexandria. Additionally, he was assigned duties at the Press and Public Relations Offices of the Patriarchate. In 2001, he served as Custodian and Financial Supervisor of the Patriarchate.
With the reopening of the Patriarchal Academy of St. Athanasios in Alexandria, Fr. Savvas was appointed its Dean by Pope Theodore II. He was also made a member of the Synod Council on Education.
On October 9, 2009, the Holy Synod of the Patriarchate of Alexandria established a new Diocese of Burundi and Rwanda and elected Fr. Savvas the first ruling bishop of the new diocese. He was consecrated Bishop of Burundi and Rwanda by Patr. Theodoros II on October 11, 2009 at the Patriarchal Church of St. Sabbas the Sanctified in Alexandria.
During the November 21, 2012 Fall meeting of the Holy Synod of the Church of Alexandria Bishop Savvas was elected Metropolitan of Accra.
