Archimandrite Meletios (Webber) was the abbot of the Monastery of St. John of San Francisco of Manton, California. He holds a doctorate in psychological counseling, is multi-lingual, and an author of note.
Archimandrite Meletios Webber was born in London of Scottish background. His post-graduate education includes a Masters degree in Theology from Oxford University, England and the Thessalonica School of Theology, Greece. It was in 1968 at Oxford that Fr. Meletios was introduced to Orthodox Christianity where after three years under the tutelage of Fr. Kallistos Ware he became Orthodox in 1973. In January 1976, Fr. Meletios was ordained a priest by the Greek Archbishop Athenagoras (Kokkinakis) of Thyateria in Great Britain.
After serving the bishop as his chaplain for several years and attending school in Greece, Fr. Meletios served at his first parish in Harrow, London, England. In 1984, he moved to the United States where he served for twenty-two years at a number of parishes, missions, and other groups under the jurisdiction of the Greek Archdiocese. In addition to serving as a missionary in Montana, Fr. Meletios served as chancellor to Bp. Anthony of the Greek diocese of San Francisco and at a parish in Santa Cruz, California. During this time in the United States Fr. Meletios earned an E.D.D. (doctorate) in Psychotherapy from the University of Montana, Missoula.
In 2005, Fr. Meletios returned to Europe, to the Netherlands, where he served at St. Nicholas Church in Amsterdam, a Russian church with a large, multi-lingual cosmopolitan community. In September 2008, Fr. Meletios was elected by the brethren of the Monastery of St. John of San Francisco at Manton, California as their Superior and abbot. During late summer 2012, Fr. Meletios Webber resigned as abbot of the Monastery of St. John and returned to Europe. Archimandrite Meletios serves at the Russian Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
