Dionysios IV (Sifnaios) of Zakynthos

His Grace Dionysios IV (Sifnaios) of Zakynthos is the Metropolitan of the Metropolis of Zakynthos and Strofades of the Church of Greece.

Life

Demetrios Sifnaios was born in Athens in 1954, the son of George and Joan Sifnaios. His mother was the daughter of the late Priest Dionysios Zakynthos Kamvasi and his grandmother, Angela Presbytera, was the niece of the late Bishop Dionysios III of Zakynthos. Demetrios attended the Rizario Church (Ecclesiastical) School from which he graduated in 1976. He continued his education at the School of Patmos before entering the Higher Ecclesiastical School in Athens. After his graduation he then attended the Theological School of Aristotle University of Thessalonica, from which he received his degree in 1983.

While a student, Demetrios was tonsured a monk on August 14, 1977 at the Monastery of Penteli and given the name Dionysios. Then, the abbot of the monastery, Bishop Chrysostomos of Dodona ordained Dionysios a deacon, followed with his ordination as a priest. As a deacon, Dionysios initially served in the Church of St. Demetrius in Ampelokipi before taking on the duties of preacher in the metropolis of Lagada, where he served from May 1983 to July 1984. On December 17, 1983, Fr. Dionysios was raised to the dignity of archimandrite.

After his election on May 10, 2010, Fr. Dionysios was consecrated an assistant bishop by Metropolitan Chrysostomos II of Zakynthos at St. Nicholas Cathedral in Kessariani on May 13, 2010. After Metr. Chrysostomos II resigned his see, Bp. Dionysios was elected his successor as Metropolitan of Zakynthos on October 7, 2011 by the Synod of Bishops of the Church of Greece.
