Christian Churches Together in the USA was started in September 2001. Its stated purpose is "to enable churches and national Christian organizations to grow closer together in Christ in order to strengthen our Christian witness in the world. "
One goal of the CCT was to address the marginalization of "conversative" religious groups within the National Council of Churches, seeking, on the one hand, a broader conversation, and, on the other, a dialogue more explicitly focused on a Trinitarian confession of faith.
