His Grace Vasilios of Arsinoe

His Grace Vasilios (Varvelis), Bishop of Arsinoe, is a retired hierarch of the Church of Alexandria.

Life

In 1969, the future bishop was born in Peristeri, Athens. He studied Theology in the Theological School of Athens. Entered the clergy as deacon in July 1997, being made priest in March 1998 by His Eminence Chrysostomos of Carthage, who at the time was serving as patriarchal representative of His Beatitude Petros VII of Alexandria to the Church of Greece.

Father Vasilios was then transferred to the Archdiocese of Johannesburg in South Africa, where he served at the Church of the Holy Anargyrs in Johannesburg. Later served in the Archdiocese of Memphis in Egypt at the Church of Saint Constantine and Helen in Cairo. As archimandrite, he was appointed as Vicar of the Church of Alexandria at its Metochion (embassy) in Athens, the Church of the Saints Athanasios, Nicholas and Fotios.

On November 30, 2014, Archimandrite Vasilios was elected Bishop of Botswana at the Patriarchal Cathedral of Saint Sabbas in Alexandria. The ordination was performed by His Beatitude Theodoros II of Alexandria, supported by the archbishops George of Guinea, Dimitrios of Irinoupolis, Gabriel of Leontopolis and Narkissos of Nubia.

On November 17, 2016, Bishop Vasilios retired from active service, being elected titular Bishop of Arsinoe.
