Seraphim (Stergioulas) of Kythira

His Eminence Seraphim (Stergioulas) of Kythira is the metropolitan of the Metropolis of Kythira under the jurisdiction of the Church of Greece. The metropolis includes the Island of Kythira off the southeastern tip of the Peloponnese peninsula. Metr. Seraphim has been metropolitan since 2005.

Life

Metr. Seraphim (Stergioulas) was born on December 27, 1950 in Vragkiana, Karditsa in western Thessaly, Greece. After completing his basic education he studied theology from 1972 to 1976 at the Aristotle University of Thessalonca. He continued his studies as a graduate student from 1976 to 1978 at the University's Department of Systematic Theology, under a scholarship.

In 1971, he joined the Holy Orders when he was ordained a deacon and received the name Seraphim. Dcn. Seraphim was ordained a priest in 1981. He was then raised to the dignity of archimandrite. From 1979 to 2005, Fr. Seraphim served as a preacher with the Metropolis of Hydra, Spetses and Aegina.

In 1981, Fr. Seraphim visited Mount Athos to research documents from the 110 Holy Fathers of the Church, especially those concerning the Neptic aspects of monasticism. This material he published in a three-volume Anthology of Philokalia.

On June 27, 2005, Fr. Seraphim was elected to the episcopate. On July 2, he was consecrated a bishop in a service led by Archbishop Christodoulos of Athens at the Metropolitan Cathedral in Athens. He was enthroned at his see at Kythira on July 30, 2005.
