Dimitrios (Zaharengas) of Irinoupolis

His Eminence Dimitrios (Zaharengas) of Irinoupolis is a hierarch of the Church of Alexandria and has been Metropolitan of the Archdiocese of Irinoupolis since 2004. Previously he served as Archbishop of the Cameroon.

Life

Born Themistocles Zaharengas in 1965 in Sohos, Thessalonica, Themistocles studied at the Ecclesiastical Education Academy of Thessalonica and the Theological Faculty of the Aristotelian University of Thessalonica. In 1989, he attended the missionary Monastery of the Archangel Michael-Tharri on the island of Rhodes. He was tonsured a monk with the name Dimitrios.

In 1992, Dimitrios began a period of service as a missionary, serving in Madagascar, India, Hong Kong, and the Philippine Islands. In 1999, he was ordained a deacon and then a priest by His Eminence Nikitas (Lulias) of Hong Kong. Aftr becoming a member of the clergy, Fr. Dimitrios served at the Church of the Annunciation in Alexandria, Egypt and as manager of the Press Office and Public Relations at the patriarchate.

On September 16, 2002 Fr. Dimitrios was elected by the Holy Synod of the Church of Alexandria as Archbishop of Cameroon. He was consecrated by Patriarch Petros VII on October 6, 2002. In 2004, Abp. Dimitrios was appointed Metropolitan of the Archdiocese of Irinoupolis.
