His Eminence Metropolitan Gabriel of Leontopolis is the ruling hierarch of the Archdiocese of Leontopolis under the jurisdiction of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria and All Africa.

Life

Metropolitan Gabriel was born in Athens, Greece in 1957. He received his post secondary education and degree from the Theological faculty of the University of Athens.

Entering the Holy Orders, he was ordained a deacon in 1981, receiving the name Gabriel, followed as a priest in 1984. He served at positions in Athens and Serres in Greek Macedonia as well as in the Financial Services of the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece.

Received into the services of the Church of Alexandria by Patriarch Parthenios III in 1990, Father Gabriel served as chancellor of the Metropolis of Zimbabwe and Patriarchal Vicar in Odessa. In June 2005, he was appointed Patriarchal Vicar of Alexandria.

On November 1, 2006, Fr. Gabriel was elected to the episcopate by the Holy Synod of the Alexandria Patriarchate as Bishop of Mareotis, patriarchal auxiliary for the Archdiocese of Alexandria. He was consecrated by Patriarch Theodoros II on November 4, 2006 in the Church of St. Savvas the Sanctified in Alexandria.

On November 21, 2012, Bishop Gabriel was elected by the Holy Synod as Metropolitan of the Archdiocese of Leontopolis and Patriarchal Vicar of Alexandria.
