Canonical release is permission granted by a bishop to allow one of his clergy or parishes to be given into the authority of another bishop. Because every cleric and parish belongs to a specific bishop, this release must be given in order for allegiance to be changed. In some instances, if a bishop acts unjustly, a refusal to grant release may be overridden on appeal.
