His Eminence Ignatius IV (Alexiou) of Arta is the Metropolitan of the Metropolis of Arta under the jurisdiction of the Church of Greece. He has served as the ruling hierarch of the metropolis since 1988.

Life

Nicholas Alexiou was born in 1945 in the mountain village of Kastania near Arta in Epirus in northwestern Greece. After he completed his secondary education in Arta he entered, in 1964, the Department of Theology of the University of Athens, graduating in 1969.

Nicholas entered the Holy Orders when he was ordained a deacon with the name Ignatius in 1971. In 1974, Dcn. Ignatius was ordained a priest by Metropolitan Ignatius III of Arta. Father Ignatius served as Preacher of Metropolis of Arta during the years from 1971 to 1988.

In 1988, Fr. Ignatius was elected to the episcopate by the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece and was consecrated the Metropolitan of the Metropolis of Arta as Ignatius IV on November 21, 1988.
