Athanasios (Kykkotis) of Cyrene
His Eminence Most Reverend Athanasios of Cyrene is Metropolitan of the Archdiocese of Cyrene, part of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria and All Africa.
Life
Athanasios was born in Morphou, Cyprus in 1958. He is a brother of the Holy Royal and Stavropegic Monastery of Kykkos of Cyprus. On a scholarship from the Monastery he attended the Faculty of Theology at the University of Athens where in addition to studies in theology he also studied Byzantine music. Following his graduation he continued post graduate studies in the history of the Byzantine world at the University of Paris.
He was ordained a deacon on August 15, 1976. On March 18, 1984, Dcn. Athanasios was ordained a priest and elevated to the dignity of archimandrite. During these years he also served as Registrar at the Monastery of Kykkos as well as a member of its Hegumen’s Council.
In 1997, with the blessing given by the Monastery of Kykkos, Patriarch Petros of Alexandria appointed Father Athanasios as Exarch of the Patriarchate to the Church of Russia, assuming his duties after arriving to Moscow on September 29, 1997.
On November 23, 1999, Fr. Athanasios was elected Bishop of Kyrini(Cyrene). He was consecrated on November 28, 1999. On October 6, 2009, the titular Diocese of Kyrini was elevated to an active Metropolis of the Patriarchal Throne, represented in the person of His Eminence Metropolitan Athanasios who continued as Exarch in Moscow.
