George (Danilov) of Nizhny Novgorod

Georgy (Danilov) of Nizhny Novgorod is the Metropolitan of Nizhny Novgorod and Aezamas and ruling hierarch of the Metropolia of Nizhny Novgorod of the Church of Russia, having been elevated to Metropolitan after the elevation of the eparchy to a metropolia in 2012. He has been the ruling bishop of Nizhny Novgorod since February 2003.

Life

The future Archbishop Georgy was born on August 14, 1964 in the city of Zhlobin in the Homiel region of the Republic of Belarus where he was baptized in the same year.

After serving his military obligation from May 1984 to June 1986, young Danilov entered the Moscow Theological Seminary later in 1986 from which he graduated in June 1990. He then entered the Moscow Theological Academy. In June 1995, Fr. Georgy graduated from the Moscow Academy with a degree in Theology.

In November 1988, he was accepted as a novice at the Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra. On December 22, 1989, he was tonsured a monk with the name Georgy by Archimandrite Theognost, the Abbot of Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra. On November 9, 1990, the monk Georgy was ordained a deacon by Bishop Vikenty (Morar), vicar bishop of Kishinev diocese. On April 9, 1991, Dn. Georgy was ordained hieromonk by Patr. Alexei II of Moscow. In January 1993, Fr. Georgy was appointed steward at the Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra.

In August 1999, Fr. Georgy was appointed director of the Patriarch's Architecture and Restoration Center at St. Sergius Lavra and, then on May 31, 2002, he was appointed steward of St. Sergius Lavra and the Moscow theological institutions.

After having been raised to the dignity of archimandrite, Archim. Georgy was elected by the Holy Synod of the Church of Russia as bishop of the Eparchy of Nizhny Novgorod on December 26, 2002. His consecration was presided over by Patr. Alexei II of Moscow at Christ the Savior Cathedral in Moscow on February 2, 2003. Bp. Georgy was elevated to archbishop on February 24, 2006.

On March 15, 2012, the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church established the Ecclesiastical Province (metropolia) of Nizhny Novgorod that included the dioceses of Vyksa, Gorodets, Lyskovo and Nizhny Novgorod. Abp. Georgy of Nizhny Novgorod and Arzamas was then consecrated Metropolitan of Metropolia of Nizhny Novgorod and Arzamas on March 18, 2012, by Patriarch Kirill of Moscow at Christ the Savior Cathedral.
