The Holy Diocese of Kisumu and West Kenya is a diocese under the Archdiocese of Nairobi of the Patriarchate of Alexandria.

History

Kisumu is the sixth-largest city of Kenya. It is one of the largest cities of Western Kenya, as well as being one of the oldest settlements in the country. The first ecclesiastical structure to incorporate East Africa (Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Kenya) was the Archdiocese of Irinoupolis in 1958. In 1999, it was renamed as Archdiocese of Kenya, while Tanzania and Uganda gained their own archbishoprics.

On November 24, 2015 the Diocese of Kisumu was established under the now-called Archdiocese of Nairobi by a Patriarchal and Synodal Decree by His Beatitude the Patriarch Theodoros II of Alexandria encompassing all the western part of Kenya, together with the Diocese of Nyeri in the surroundings of Mount Kenya. On December 6 the Patriarch enthroned the blessed Archmandrite Athanasios Akunda, Kenyan native, as its founding bishop. Over one thousand Kenyans attended his funeral in 2019.

The diocese runs schools, an orphanage with nearly thirty children, clinics and a monastery.
