Philemon (Agiannanitis) of Kavasos

His Eminence, the Most Reverend Philemon of Kavasos was a retired hierarch of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria and All Africa as the Titular Metropolitan of Kavasos. He had served the patriarchate as a hierarch for twenty years before his retirement in 2000.

Life

Metr. Philemon was born on September 30, 1934 in Lyon, France. His post-secondary education was at the Theological Faculty in the University of Thessalonica. After his graduation he was tonsured a monk in 1955 at the Monastery of Pendelis, receiving the name Philemon. Entering the Holy Orders, Mnk. Philemon was ordained a deacon on March 15, 1959 by Metropolitan Ierotheos (Paraskevopoulos) of Aitolia and Akarnania. Dcn. Philemon was ordained Presbyter and raised to the rank of archimandrite on December 25, 1960 by Metropolitan Ignatius III of Arta.

In 1964, Father Philemon transferred to the Church of Alexandria and was appointed the parish priest of the Church of St. Nicholas in Ibrahimia, near Alexandria. During the following years, Fr. Philemon served appointments at the Churches of the Transfiguration of the Savior in Port Said and Annunciation of the Theotokos in Alexandria. Then, he was appointed Hegumen of the Patriarchal Monastery of St. Savvas in Alexandria.

On November 27, 1979, Fr. Philemon was elected to the episcopate and consecrated Bishop of Kanopos, in the Church of St. Savvas in Alexandria, Egypt on December 2, 1979 by Metropolitans Varnavas of Pilousion, Frumentios of Irinoupolis, and Paul of Johannesburg and Pretoria. Following his consecration as bishop he was appointed hegumen of the Monastery of St. George in Old Cairo.

On November 23, 1999, Bp. Philemon was elected Metropolitan of Dar-es-Salaam in Tanzania, now the Archdiocese of Irinoupolis. He served in Tanzania until his retirement on November 4, 2000. On March 14, 2003, Metr. Philemon was elected as the titular Metropolitan of Kavasos.

Metr. Paul reposed on August 3, 2012. His funeral service took place on August 7, 2012 at the Church of St. Athanasius in Kypseli, Athens, a dependency of the Alexandrian Patriarchate. He was buried at the First (Municipal) Cemetery in Athens, Greece.[1]
