Themistocles Zaharengas was born in Sohos, Thessalonica in 1965. He began his ecclesiastical education at the Education Academy of Thessalonica and continued at the Theological Faculty of the Aristotelian University of Thessalonica. In 1999, he was ordained deacon, followed by ordination to the priesthood. Entering the Church of Alexandria, Fr. Dimitrios was appointed superior of the Holy Church of the Annunciation in Alexandria, Egypt. In addition, he served in the Press Office as Public Relations Manager of the Patriarchate of Alexandria.

Fr. Dimitrios was elected Archbishop of Cameroon on September 16, 2002 and was consecrated by Patriarch Petros VII on October 6, 2002. He was subsequently assigned as Metropolitan of Irinopolis.
