loss of subdiaconate in West
It's not quite true that the subdiaconate has fallen into disuse in the West; it was suppressed by Pope Paul VII of Rome in his motu proprio Ministeria Quaedam of 1972: "The functions heretofore assigned to the subdeacon are entrusted to the reader and the acolyte; consequently, the major order of subdiaconate no longer exists in the Latin Church" Richardson mcphillips1 09:54, November 16, 2007 (PST)
