Perhaps most of our entries will fall under either the 19th, 20th or 21st centuries, so may just need these 3 subcategories to begin; also, the name of the category here on OW would be shortened to something like "19th-century bishops". Thought I would raise the idea at any rate. Would be willing to go back and add the categories to existing articles. + | :Yes, the number of bishops is becoming large. At times I've thought about other categorization but couldn't come up with a scheme without some sort of complications. One way would be by date, such as you suggest, but setting it at only century interval could lead to many bishops that span over a century change - would one then place the bishop in both centuries? Perhaps a greater time interval would work better. The 'by city' category is one course, but witness, there are a lot of cities! One thought I had, was to establish categories by autocephalous/autonomous churches with bishops outside of the recognized churches placed in a 'miscellaneous or other' category. There maybe other neater approaches - if we can come up with them!! [[User:Wsk|Wsk]] 14:33, February 7, 2012 (HST) |

I started these Subcategories to help crosscheck the succession boxes that are in our bishop articles. First I thought that I could modify the Succession box template but its usage of the {{title}} was inconsistent, sometimes contained links. - Andy 20:31, March 1, 2010 (UTC)

Since there are so many articles on so many bishops, and the number will grow over time, for greater organizational purposes I propose that we follow the convention used over at Wikipedia, where they have sub-categories for: "Category:Eastern Orthodox bishops by period." Thus, for example, they have sub-categories for bishops by century:
- 19th-century Eastern Orthodox bishops
- 20th-century Eastern Orthodox bishops
- 21st-century Eastern Orthodox bishops, etc.
Perhaps most of our entries will fall under either the 19th, 20th or 21st centuries, so may just need these 3 subcategories to begin; also, the name of the category here on OW would be shortened to something like "19th-century bishops".
