Athanasius was patriarch during the period of the developing [[schism]] between the Chalcedonians and non-Chalcedonians following the [[Fourth Ecumenical Council]] at [[Chalcedon]].

==Life==
Little is known of Athanasius' early life. Before his election as patriarch he was a [[priest]] in an Alexandrian [[church]]. His reign was comparatively uneventful as there were no pronounced problems in the church during his patriarchate, as the conflict about the decisions at the Council at Chalcedon had subsided. 

Athanasius reposed on [[September 29]], 496, the day of his commemorated in the Coptic [[Synaxarion]], the 20th of Thout.
