Talk:Maria (Skobtsova)

I almost saved this page under Mary Skobtsova, and after much groaning I finally decided it better to put it under the name most people would search for. If one of the sysops believes, as I do, that saints should be known by their English names, feel free to switch it around and put a redirect in place for Maria Skobtsova. --Basil 21:59, 12 Jan 2005 (CST)

Generally, I think saints should be listed here by whatever English-speakers most often call them, not necessarily by Anglicized versions of the names.
I'm a little worried about this for "Emily" too -- most people know her as St. Emilia, no? FrJohn
Or St. Emmelia. The OCA saints pages have it all three ways. --Basil 05:23, 14 Jan 2005 (CST)
One question I had was regarding the phrase "Our mother among the saints" -- for what type of saint is that? I'm familiar with the "father" version, which is for bishops. Martyred female monastics such as St. Maria (according to the Antiochian Liturgikon, at any rate) would get "the holy and glorious Venerable-martyr N."
See Saint commemorations for the list of forms. --Rdr. Andrew 06:12, 13 Jan 2005 (CST)

Thanks for the tip. I don't think I had ever seen such a list before, so the various introductions seemed fluid rather than specific for the category of saint. St. Maria is both a nun and a martyr. I'm not sure what the difference is between martyr and venerable-martyr, so I'll just fix it for martyr. The actual text of her glorification, as far I can see, did not give a specific introduction. I have not seen her listed in a synaxarion yet, though. --Basil 15:08, 13 Jan 2005 (CST)
A Venerable-martyr is a martyred monastic. --Rdr. Andrew 15:12, 13 Jan 2005 (CST)
Ah, thank you. --Basil 05:23, 14 Jan 2005 (CST)

I hope noone minds, but I'm a big fan of material I can access online, so I added links to online versions of Mother Maria's writings that I've come across. ~~John Cz. talk 20:56, March 17, 2006 (CST)

Mind? Definitely not! Thanks John. — FrJohn (talk)
