The first Russian Orthodox churches in New Zealand were established in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch in the 1950s by Mitred Archpriest '''Alexey Gavrilovitch Godyaew''' ([[ Born 8 February 8]]1900 Bolshaya Utcha, 1900–[[Russia. Married Anna Muhlen in Paris in 1930. Died at home 19 March 19]], 1991). Father's Name: Gavriil Godyaew. Mother's Name: Antonina Godyaew nee Bargina. Buried at Waikanae Cemetery.
Fr Alexey travelled extensively pastoring the parishes until his retirement.
