: I don't know what the practice of the Russian church is, but some churches do have non-episcopal members of their synods, e.g., the Church of Jerusalem, which includes some archimandrites. {{User:ASDamick/sig}} 09:14, February 2, 2006 (CST)
:: Coming back to this over a decade and a half later -- as St. John lived and was in active ministry during the period where Russian did not have a Patriarchate and operated under the system started under Tsar Peter, I beleive there was much greater involvement of non-episcopal clergy in the Holy Synod until the restoration of the Patriarchate. I will return to some notes from my research and try to update this article with some biographical information, God willing. Currently, the two biographies I have worked with are ''A Prodigal Saint'' and the biography printed by Holy Transfiguration Monastery. Obviously one is more academic and the other hagiography, so I will try to find a good balance between the two in updating this page.
