Procopius I (Georgiadis) of Athens

His Eminence the Most Reverend Procopius I (Georgiadis) of Athens was the Metropolitan of Athens of the Church of Greece from 1874 to 1889.

Life

Little is known of his life or his episcopate. Procopius I was born Procopius Georgiadis, in 1813, in town of Aigio in Achaea in the northwestern part of the Peloponnese peninsula.

Having entered the Holy Orders, Procopius advanced into the episcopate and, in 1852, became Metropolitan of Messenia in the southwestern part of the Peloponnese peninsula. On May 27, 1874, he was enthroned Metropolitan of Athens and all Greece.

On December 18, 1878, at a sitting of the Holy Synod as a Council of Athens presided over by Metr. Procopius, Apostolos Makrakis, a leader of the "awakening movement" in post-revolutionary Greece who preached against Western "enlightenment" including Freemasonry, was condemned on the pretext of his support of the theory of the triple constitution of humanity.

Metr. Procopius I reposed on January 30, 1889.
