This icon appears to have its origins in the southwestern Russia, however, no supporting documentation exists for its origins and where it first appeared. This is one of the few Orthodox icons of the Theotokos which do not depict the infant Jesus.  Given its likely point of origin - near Roman Catholic Poland - it is almost certainly an Orthodox adaptation of the Roman Catholic imagery contained in the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Our_Lady_of_Sorrows Our Lady of Sorrows] devotion.
