Apart from his doctoral degree in philosophy from Oxford, Bishop Metropolitan Hilarion also holds a doctorate in theology from [[St. Sergius Orthodox Theological Institute (Paris, France)|St Sergius Orthodox Theological Institute in Paris]], which was awarded to him in 1999. In February 2005 he was elected a ''Privat-Dozent'' of the [[w:University of Fribourg|University of Fribourg]] (Switzerland).
