Suspension, when used in the Orthodox Church in regard to clergy, is a censure by which a person ordained to the Holy Orders is deprived, entirely or partially, of the use of grace to exercise the ecclesiastical liturgical or administrative duties of his office. Suspension is temporary and expires after certain conditions have been met as written in the order of suspension issued by an ecclesiastical authority. Suspension is pedagogical in nature and is intended to enable the correction of a delinquency.
Termination of a suspension is either through remedy of the delinquency or, if the delinquency cannot be corrected, through deposition, i. e. defrocking/Laicization.
