I think you've got a great resource here, and have been exploring constructing something similar using EasyTimeline. I've found that once the timeline is up, it isn't so hard to maintain. Feel free to drop me an email if that is something you'd be interested in and I'd be happy to assist with development. I do of course, also understand the competing need for simplicity of design - so no hard feelings if you don't take me up on the offer.
