His Holiness Maximus V (born Maximos Vapordzis, Μάξιμος Βαπορτζῆς) was the 266th from 1946 to 1948.
Officially he resigned in 1948 due to poor health. Unofficially, he was forced to resign by western powers who didn't approve of his close ties with the Patriarch of Moscow, as the Cold War was beginning to take shape. Patriarch Maximus V was succeeded by Archbishop Athenagoras of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. He died in Switzerland on January 1, 1972.
