I have not found any evidence that references to St. John as a Bishop. It might be more accurate to refer to him as St. John Damascene.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Gsarraf (talkcontribs) .

You are right that he was not a bishop. However, the "of [place]" usage in English does not necessary refer only to episcopacy. There are multiple saints who were never bishops who are commonly known by such names, e.g., Columba of Iona, Benedict of Nursia, Anthony of the Kiev Caves, Clement of Alexandria, etc. —Fr.
