His Eminence Archbishop Stylianos (Harkianakis) of Australia is the current archbishop of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia and chairman of the Standing Conference of Canonical Orthodox Churches in Australia.

Timeline

  • 1935 Dec 29: Born in Rethymon, Crete. Went to study Theology at Halki.
  • 1957: Ordained to diaconate.
  • 1958: Graduated from Orthodox School of Theology, Halki.
Ordained to priesthood.
  • 1958-66: Completed postgraduate studies in systematic theology and philosophy of religion in Bonn, West Germany.
  • 1965: Declared professor of theology at Athens University.
  • 1966: Appointed abbot of Holy Patriarchal Monastery of Vlatodon, Thessaloniki. Was founding member, then vice-president, and later president, of the Patriarchal Institute of Patristic Studies within monastery.
  • 1969-75: Lectured in Systematic Theology at University of Thessaloniki
  • 1970: Elected by Holy Synod of Ecumenical Patriarchate as Titular Metropolitan of Militoupolis within the Monastery of Vlatodon, serving as exarch of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in matters concerning Northern Greece and the Holy Mountain.
  • 1973: Awarded the International Award Gottfried von Herder
  • 1975: Elected Archbishop of Australia.
Engaged in many dialogues between Orthodoxy and others, most prominently as co-chairman of the Theological Dialogue with the Roman Catholic Church, but also with the Anglican Church (also as co-chairman).
Started teaching Orthodox Theology and Spirituality at Sydney University.
  • 1980: Given Award for Poetry from Academy of Athens.
  • 1985: Honourary Doctorate from Lublin University, Poland.
  • 1986: Dean of St Andrew's Greek Orthodox Theological College, lecturer of systematic theology (remains as such to present time).
