Sigillion

THe Sigillion is a term from the Byzantine world that denoted an official document (act) that bears a seal. Documents referred to as a Sigillion were issued by the emperor of the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire, Councils of the Orthodox Church, and the Patriarch of Constantinople.

Notable examples

  • Sigillion of 1583 - against the Calendar of Pope Gregory XIII of Rome - Council in Constantinople.
  • Sigillion of 1756 - against the New Calendar by Ecumenical Patriarch Cyril V of Constantinople.
