The Romanian Orthodox Diocese of Australia and New Zealand was established by the Holy Synod in March 2008 with the election of Archimandrite Mihail as the ruling bishop of Australia and New Zealand.

The diocese consists of ten parishes, with two each in Melbourne and Sydney, and one each in Adelaide, Brisbane, Perth, and in New Zealand, one each in Wellington, Auckland and Christchurch.

Prior to its establishment as a diocese, the Romanian Orthodox parishes were first directly responsible to the Holy Synod, then grouped together in a Vicariate (under Rev. Fr Dumitru Coman). The first parish was established in 1972.
