Metropolitan Photios (Savvaides) was a senior hierarch of the Ecumenical Patriarchate The bulk of his episcopal ministry was served as primate of the Metropolis of Imbros and Tenedos. In this role, he succeeded Metropolitan Demetrius, who had been elected Ecumenical Patriarch. At his death he was first hierarch of the Ecumenical Throne, holding the office of Metropolitan of the senior see of Heraclea, Exarch of Thrace and Macedonia.

Life

Photios was born in Chalcedon on April 21, 1924. He studied at the Great Patriarchal School and later at the Theological School of Halki. He was ordained to the diaconate by Metropolitan Maximos of Chalcedon and served as Archdeacon of the Metropolis of Chalcedon. In 1959 he was elected Bishop of Tralles, serving as an auxiliary to the Metropolitan of Chalcedon. He was elected Metropolitan of Imbros and Tenedos in 1972 and served in that role until 2002, when he was selected as Metropolitan of Heraclea.

Metropolitan Photios died on June 24, 2007, at the Baloukli Hospital in Constantinople.
