His Eminence, the Most Reverend Paul (Lyngris) of Memphis is the Archbishop of the the Archdiocese of Memphis of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria and All Africa.

Life

Abp. Paul was born in 1920 in Kafr-el-Zayat in Egypt. He attended the Theological Faculty of the University of Athens. He was ordained to the diaconate in 1940. His ordination to the priesthood occurred in 1952. After serving as a parish priest, he was assigned as Vicar General in Harare, Zimbabwe between 1954 and 1968. In 1968, he was elevated to the episcopate and was elected Archbishop of Johannesburg and Pretoria. After the death of Pope and Patriarch Parthenios III in 1996, Abp. Paul was elected to the position of Deputy (Vicar) of the throne.

In addition to his native Greek, His Eminence speaks Arabic, English, and French.
