Panteleimon (Mertyres) of Lemnos
His Eminence Panteleimon (Mertyres) of Lemnos and St. Eustratius was the Metropolitan of the Metropolis of Lemnos and St. Eustratius under the administration of the Church of Greece. The Metropolis of Lemnos and St. Eustratius is a metropolis in the New Lands of Greece, under the jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. [1]. He was the ruling hierarch of the metropolis from 1960 to 1988.
Life
George Mertyres was born in 1908 in Ermione, Argolidos on the eastern part of the Peloponnese peninsula of Greece. Raised by devout parents, his early education was rooted in the Orthodox faith. He was tonsured a monk in 1932 at the Monastery of St. Charalambos Leukon before he was ordained to the diaconate and priesthood and received the name Panteleimon.
After completing his theological education in Athens, Father Panteleimon was assigned as Chancellor of the Diocese of Skyros. In the late 1940s, Fr. Panteleimon served as a reserve military preacher in the Greek military forces. Following his discharge in 1951, he served as a spiritual advocate and educator in the schools of the National Foundation in Kos Island in the Dodecannese Islands. In 1956, he was called back by the Synod to serve the church's ministries.
In 1960, Fr. Panteleimon was elected to the episcopate by the Synod of Bishops and consecrated Metropolitan of the Metropolis of Lemnos and St. Eustratius on May 12, 1960. By 1988, Metr. Panteleimon's health began to fail, and on August 20, 1988 he submitted his resignation from the see of Lemnos and St. Eustratius after more than 50 years service to His Church.
Metr. Panteleimon reposed on November 11, 1998.
