The Metropolis of Mithymna is one of the metropolises of the New Lands in Greece that is within the jurisdiction of the Church of Constantinople but de facto is administered for practical reasons as part of the Church of Greece under an agreement between the churches of Athens and Constantinople. The metropolis is located on the island of Lesbos in the northern Aegean Sea near the western coast of Turkey

History

The first attested bishop of Mithymna was Christodoros in 520. In 640, Mithymna was mentioned in the Ecthesis as an archdiocese. Around 1084, the see was designated a metropolis during the reign of emperor Alexius I Comnenus. In the thirteenth century the Fourth Crusade brought Latin control of the area and based on this the Roman Catholic Church maintains a purely titular see of Mithymna.
