A locum tenens (from Latin, meaning "place-holder") is a term used to identify a person who temporarily fulfills the duties of another. In Orthodox Christianity, the term is used to identify a bishop assigned temporarily to rule a diocese for which the previous ruling bishop is no longer present, either due to death, transfer, or removal, until a replacement is elected and enthroned.
