John the Cantor

St. John the Cantor of Qinnesrin, also known as Mor Yuhanon Psaltes, is a 6th century father and saint of the Syriac Orthodox Church.

Life

St. John was the third abbot of the Monastery of the Eagle's Nest ('Qinnesrin') of that name and is also known as 'the Calligrapher.' The Saint was educated at the Qinnesrin Monastery and also ordained a priest there prior to becoming its abbot. During his life he was renowned for both his poetry and his piety. St. John fell asleep in the Lord around 600.

Commemoration

St. John the Cantor is commemorated in the Syriac Orthodox Church on 13 January.
