John (Zachariou) of Johannesburg

Metropolitan John Zacharou (Greek: Ιωάννης Ζαχαρίου; 27 July 1954 - 2 October 2000) was Metropolitan of Johannesburg and Pretoria under Patriarchate of Alexandria.

Biography

John Zacharou was born on 27 July 1954 in Piraeus. He studied Theology at the University of Athens.

During 1975-1985 he served as a monk at the Monastery of St. Catherine on Mount Sinai.

Deacon and Elder ordained in 1986 and joined the Patriarchate of Alexandria. He serves as rector of churches in Cairo and the Secretary of the Patriarchal guardianship in Cairo.

In March 1997 he was elected Bishop Nitria and was appointed by His Beatitude the Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa Petros VII the Patriarchal Vicar of Cairo.

On 16 March 1997 he was ordained titular Bishop of Nitria.

On September 23, 1997 he was elected Metropolitan of Zimbabwe.

January 13, 1998 he was elected Metropolitan of Johannesburg and Pretoria.

He passed away on 2 October 2000. The funeral was chant in Johannesburg on October 6 at the Cathedral of Saints Constantine and Helen. The output sequence was protectors as the representative of the Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria Metropolitan of Good Hope Sergius. The corpse metastantos Hierarch will be transferred then to Athens, where he was bured.
